What started as a small, quality-first shop in a garage in Largo has grown into one of Florida’s most trusted names in mechanical contracting—thanks to the people who built it, the values that shaped it, and the partners who believed in our work.
Our Story

In 1991, Tim Heffelmire founded Airco with a commitment to do things differently—no shortcuts, no gimmicks, and no inflated promises. Just precision, hard work, and real accountability. Tim didn’t want to build the biggest shop in Florida. He wanted to build the most reliable one, and it all started in his garage.
Over the decades, Airco grew carefully and intentionally, earning its reputation job by job. With Michelle Heffelmire leading the office operations and Dan Hunter driving field performance, the company stayed lean, smart, and responsive. Their leadership created a culture where everyone—from the office to the field—understood the value of doing things the right way.
That same culture is alive and well today.

Airco wouldn’t be what it is today without the vision and values of the Heffelmire family. Tim Heffelmire built this company from the ground up with his own hands—and more importantly, with his own standards. He believed that craftsmanship mattered, that promises should be kept, and that every project was an opportunity to earn someone’s trust.
Michelle Heffelmire helped shape the operational backbone of Airco. She brought focus, follow-through, and a level of care that showed up in every client relationship. In the field, Dan Hunter carried the company’s work ethic forward—leading by example, solving problems, and holding the line on quality every single day.
Their leadership wasn’t loud, but it was unmistakable. They treated people right, led with integrity, and showed that a mechanical contracting company could run on heart just as much as horsepower. Today, we’re proud to carry that legacy forward—not by imitating it, but by staying true to what made it work.

1991 — Airco Opens Its Doors
Tim and Michelle Heffelmire launch Airco Mechanical Contractors in Largo, Florida, bringing a no-nonsense, high-integrity approach to mechanical contracting. His goal: deliver honest, high-quality work that speaks for itself.
1995–2005 — Growth Through Reputation
Airco earns the trust of general contractors, construction managers, and developers across the region. No billboards, no flash—just referrals from people who’ve seen us show up and deliver.
2008 — Built to Endure
Amid the 2008 recession, Airco stays grounded in its values—prioritizing quality work, loyal client relationships, and right-sizing operations to weather the storm and commit to the long game.
2010 — Steady and Strong
With Michelle Heffelmire managing operations and Dan Hunter leading the field, Airco becomes known for consistency, dependability, and clean execution on complex commercial HVAC projects.
2015 — Evolving with Intention
As commercial construction advances, Airco integrates updated tools and fabrication techniques—without compromising the hands-on, high-standard approach it was founded on.
2025 — New Leadership, Same Principle
After decades of leadership, the Heffelmires pass the torch to Jeff Metzgar and Brian Wilkinson—two field-seasoned professionals with a deep respect for the company’s roots. Their focus: honor the past, empower the team, and grow with purpose.
Today — The Work Continues

With decades in the mechanical trades, they know what it means to plan smart, build clean, and lead from the field—not just the office.
Jeff brings deep knowledge in project leadership and field operations, with a reputation for being direct, accountable, and trusted by the teams he leads. Brian adds a sharp eye for preconstruction, estiamating, systems, relationships, and company culture, rooted in years of working across Florida’s commercial construction scene. Together, they’re not chasing scale—they’re focused on staying hands-on, responsive, and relentlessly true to Airco’s core values.
They chose Airco because it already stood for something solid. And now, they’re making sure it stays that way—for the next generation of builders, clients, and team members.
